TikTok to be banned on government devices, Attorney-General confirms

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has confirmed a TikTok ban for all work devices belonging to government officials, after concerns that Australian data could be accessed by the Chinese government. This makes Australia the last of the Five Eyes partners to ban Tik Tok from public servants’ devices.

Next&Co’s Digital Media Wastage reports have shown Australian advertisers wasting 41% of their digital advertising spend in 2022, with retail brands bearing the brunt. Advertisers are recommended to conduct an independent assessment on their ad spend and delivery to reduce spend wastage in 2023.

Silicon Valley Bank is shut down by regulators in biggest bank failure since global financial crisis

Silicon Valley Bank has been shut down with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp taking control over deposits as the receiver. Depositors who are insured will receive up to $250,000 per deposit or per bank, whereas uninsured depositors will receive a receivership certificate for their balance.

What’s on the GA4 roadmap?

Exciting times are ahead for GA4 with Universal Analytics sunsetting soon. New releases such as the availability of item-scoped custom dimensions, updates to attributions in May 2023 and GA360 and event GA4 UI supporting RegEx, are only some of the few new features being released in the coming months.

Reach new users with Optimised Targeting

Optimised targeting allows advertisers to reach new and users most likely to convert outside of a selected audience segment. Already available across Youtube campaigns, it will replace targeting expansion for display, video and audio line items from May 2023. To use this feature, ensure that all Line Items are assigned eligible audience lists and use automated bidding. Its recommended impacted LIs be monitored to guarantee performance remains unaffected.

Performance Max Billing in SA360

From 1st April 2023, all Search Ads 360 accounts will have their Performance Max campaigns billed in SA360. This is due to Floodlight conversions becoming compatible with PMAX in mid March 2023. Billing will be introduced for floodlight campaigns whether brands use floodlights or Google Ads conversions. If Floodlights are in use across search campaigns, it is recommended to utilise them for PMAX as well. This ensures consistency across campaigns and makes retargeting opportunities across GMP easier.

Say goodbye to Activity-Based Audiences

From May 20 2023, activity-based audiences will be deprecated. This means you will not be able to create campaign activity-based audiences and frequency-based audiences, and use/make any updates to these audiences in existing IOs/LIs. Note that any LIs assigned deprecated audiences targeting features may be paused.

Launching: Brand Control

In our last newsletter, we mentioned Google’s plan to refresh the Verification feature on CM360 and the time has finally come. Verification has been rebranded to Brand Control, intended to heighten user experience by improving existing workflows. Please note that ad serving operations will remain the same with changes only to the UI experience and name.

What’s new in Ads Creative Studio

This year, there’s been a clear focus on improving video. The inclusion of new video editing capabilities and templates plus further user customisation across existing templates (which were restricted in the past), have made the tool even more user friendly. Additionally, video projects now can also be created for CM360 with time and day scheduling functionality. While the introduction of a Bulk Variant Import feature, across all creative types, adds to this by allowing users the option to make quick changes in bulk by simply uploading a spreadsheet.
